Volunteer Ride Leaders

Bike Bus Edmonton is powered by community—and our volunteer ride leaders are the heart of every ride. Whether you're guiding the group, cheering us on, or helping riders feel safe and supported, your role makes a real difference.

We welcome adults of all cycling abilities to join us in creating joyful, safe, and inclusive rides for kids and families.

Pilot

Leads from the front

  • Manages wayfinding and sets the pace

  • Regroups riders before crossings

  • Keeps the ride flowing smoothly

Crossing Supervisor

Supports safe street crossings

  • Assists riders at each crossing

  • Returns to the front after each crossing to prepare for the next

  • Enhances safety and coordination

Recommended skills:

  • 5+ years of regular bicycle commuting experience

Tips for leaders in this role:

  • Use your most nimble bicycle, there will be tight turns and repositioning as a part of this role.

Sweeper

Rides at the back

  • Ensures no rider is left behind

  • Supports slower riders and keeps the group together

Joy Rider

Brings the vibes

  • Plays music, cheers, and keeps energy high

  • Encourages enthusiasm and fun for all ages

Inclusion Rider

Supports riders with diverse needs

  • Rides the loaner cargo bike (Bunch Bike) with passengers

  • Helps ensure everyone can participate comfortably

Backup Ride Leader

Steps in when needed

  • Fills vacant roles if someone can’t make it

  • Ensures coverage and continuity

In smaller groups, leaders may take on multiple roles—for example, the sweeper may also act as the crossing supervisor.
